Training in Compassion: Zen Teachings on the Practice of Lojong, CC 3/16

Saturday, March 16
10 am - 4 pm
with Zoketsu Norman Fischer

59 simple but profound slogans for softening your heart for love and concern for others.

In this workshop we'll practice guided meditation, journaling, and focused small group and large group discussion as techniques to help us digest a much-loved and well-used traditional Indo-Tibetan Buddhist text. Usually referred to as Lojong (mind training), the text is a handbook for opening the heart to compassion. Its 59 slogans go from the profound ("rest in the openness of mind") to the bluntly comic ("don't expect applause") and constitute an eminently user-friendly course in seeing through your smallness and opening up your mind.

Compassion is central to Zen, but implicit, so there's a need for Zen students to bring out the compassion side much more, and more explicitly. Hence this workshop. It is based on Norman Fischer's new book Training in Compassion: Zen Teachings on the Practice of Lojong. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the workshop, so that the process of training you will begin can be continued.
