Brian McCaffrey

I completed Establishing the Path of Practice in 2009, which was an experience that not only deepened my practice but made me want to find a way to be more deeply involved in the sangha. Consequently I enrolled in the one year Leadership Program, which gave me the opportunity to begin to understand the structure of our organization and some of the issues that we are currently facing.

In 2012 I was elected to the board and have served as chair of the Governance Committee and presently as Vice Chair of the Board. Board service has been both demanding and rewarding. The learning curve has been steep. I have offered to serve for a second term so that both the organization and I can derive some benefit from my last three years of experience.

Before coming to SFZC, my primary non-profit experience consisted of five years on the board of a progressive, local, private school, including two years as president of the board. I received my BA from Stanford University and a Masters in Teaching degree from Reed College. After a brief career as a high school English teacher, I enrolled in law school and received a JD from Hastings College of the Law. I later interrupted my legal career for a three-year sojourn in China from 1979 to 1982, where my wife, Sylvia, and I taught in a Chinese university and traveled extensively throughout the country. I now practice law, primarily in the areas of estate planning and probate litigation. Sylvia and I live in San Francisco, and we are the proud parents of two young men, Mike and Matt, who are doing good and well in the world.
