There are a wide variety of ways to experience Zen practice at Tassajara. We warmly invite you to explore at whatever level you choose, and encourage you to ask any questions may have.
An opportunity to practice Zen meditation and work alongside the Tassajara residential community.
Explore Zen teachings, meditation, and work practice under the guidance of an experienced teacher.
Hiking trails are abundant around Tassajara, which is located in the rugged Los Padres National Forest.
The Baths and Hot Springs
The Japanese-style bathhouse has separate sides for men and women (the men’s side has co-ed bathing in the evenings), and is clothing optional. Each side has two hot plunges, a steam room, communal showers, a private bath, spacious sun decks, and creek access.
Stone Office Talks
An opportunity to discuss with a senior Tassajara student, in an open format, any aspect of Zen, Buddhism, or monastic life that may be of interest. Talks are usually offered on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday evenings from 8:00-9:00pm.
Dharma Talks/Events
are also offered regularly by resident and visiting teachers and retreat leaders. Look for event times and locations posted outside the office and dining room.
The Swimming Pool
The pool has a changing room, a restroom, and a cold shower. No lifeguard is on duty. While children are welcomed at all times at the pool, the suggested children’s swimming time is from 1:00-3:00pm. At all other times, lap swimming takes precedence.
Bocce Ball
There is a Bocce Ball court in front of the Pine Rooms and instructions are available in the office.
The Library
Open for reading and browsing. Books are not available for checking out unless you are a student.

Articles and photos chronicling Tassajara’s history and are found on the porch behind the office.
Board Games
Several board games are available on the porch.
