Sewing Buddha's Robe

Instruction in sewing a rakusu, Buddha’s robe, is offered for those who are preparing for the Bodhisattva Initiation Ceremony with a Zen Center or affiliated teacher. Participation by those who need to repair an old rakusu or wish to sew one as a gift is also encouraged.

Please register in the Green Gulch office at 415.383.3134 before attending for the first time and be sure to check ahead for the dates with the Green Gulch office.

Rakusu Sewing Instructions are available on the web site under Teachings.

A donation of $50 to $250 is suggested for sewing materials and instruction, with an additional donation for the ceremony.

Meiya Wender
Meiya Wender has practiced at Zen Center since 1972 and received Dharma Transmission from Tenshin Reb Anderson in 2002. She has held many monastic positions at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center and Green Gulch, including director, ino, tenzo, and tanto. She has studied the Way of Tea for many years, including a year at the Urasenke Midorikai program in Kyoto, and teaches Tea in Sowing the Moon Teahouse at Green Gulch.
