Rusan Dale Kent, author of Tassajara: Dinners & Desserts, lived and practiced at Tassajara for many years where he spent much of his time in the kitchen cooking and serving as Tenzo (head cook). After earning a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, he worked as a baker before moving to the monastery. He has been invited to cook and lead workshops in cooking and qigong at practice centers around the country. Dale studied with Wendy Johnson, Tom Wessels, and Peter Forbes at the Center for Whole Communities where he explored issues around local food, sustainable living, and the importance of building stronger connections between people and the natural world. He recently completed a year long course in Biodynamic Gardening at the Rudolf Steiner College. He has spent the last several years gardening, writing, practicing Tai Chi and teaching Qigong in Northern Nevada. In 2008 he began qigong teacher training with Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming at the YMAA Retreat Center in Garberville, CA. He was recently ordained as a Zen priest by Gaelyn Godwin. Currently he is a resident priest at City Center, and is employed as a professional chef.
