Supported by community, grounded in practice. Our lineage of Soto Zen is an ancient tradition founded in India and grounded in the practice of the Buddha and our ancestors. Our Zen lineage developed over centuries as it traveled through China to Japan, and eventually to California. Zen in America is still very young. In a little over 50 years, San Francisco Zen Center has branched into 16 other states, has trained 167 teachers, and is currently training 61 priests who will continue to carry the light of the Dharma to practice centers throughout the world.
It is our vow to honor our founder Suzuki Roshi's legacy by continuing to train Zen priests and lay practitioners for at least the next 500 years. Please help us preserve our teachings and our temples, which offer refuge to thousands of visitors every year and are cultural institutions—landmarks—as the history of Zen continues to unfold.
Please become a sustaining member of the San Francisco Zen Center community today.
Sustaining members may choose one of four categories which honor the interrelationship of nature's four elements: Dharma Ocean, Forest, Rain, and Light. More information...
The membership program is designed to nourish our practice together, with community gatherings that enhance our practice life. All members receive a quarterly newsletter with announcements of upcoming member activities, book club suggestions and recounts of the previous quarter's activities. Events include member appreciation, garden days, volunteer opportunities, holiday community gatherings and museum excursions. Members are encouraged and supported to organize regionally and host events in their area.
