Larry Bye

I have been a Zen practitioner since the 1980s and received lay ordination in 1999. Since then I have had the opportunity to participate in a number of practice periods at City Center, Linda Ruth Cutts’ DEPP program as well as two practice events in Japan and a study trip to China. I am very grateful for this practice which has so helped me to wake up to my relationships, work and whole life. I served on the Zen Center board from 2004-2010. During these years I served as chair of the board’s development committee. I am honored to stand once again as a candidate for the board in order to continue to be of service to Zen Center.

I work as a Senior Fellow in Public Health at NORC at the University of Chicago where I lead NORC’s San Francisco office and direct health marketing/communication and policy studies. Prior to this I served as Vice President/Senior Research Director at Field Research Corporation, a San Francisco-based marketing/opinion research company (2001-2012), and as founder/CEO of Communication Sciences Group and Survey Methods Group (1985-2000), two related San Francisco-based companies specializing in health research and program development.

I serve on the board of the Kevin J. Mossier Foundation, a national philanthropy focused on the needs of the LGBT community. I also recently serviced on the board of the Movement Advancement Project, a national funder’s collaborative working to advance the cause of LGBT civil rights. I am interested in comparative religion, politics, international travel and the performing arts. I live in San Francisco with my partner of more than 30 years, Edward Kerry.
