Paul Grantham

Paul Grantham is a systems executive with a twenty-year history of leading software and systems for international firms in finance, telecommunications, and transportation industries, including DHL, Sprint, Covad, Xerox PARC, and BankAmerica. Most recently, he was the Chief Operations Officer of a successful Silicon Valley on-line banking start-up. Paul has a MS in Mathematics and in Computer Science/Operations Research. He speaks German and Chinese and travels to practice in China. He has been meditating since his college days in Berkeley and has been active in Zen Center programs, sesshins, and classes since 1995. In 2001 he received lay ordination (jukai), with Blanche Hartman and Jordan Thorn as his practice leaders. He was elected to the SFZC board in 2007.

Since being elected to the board three years ago, Paul has focused his efforts in three areas:

  • Providing Zen Center with low cost, reliable, and secure information systems that help us better support the practicing community.
  • Creating a retirement center so that we can all enjoy our practice through the ends of our lives.
  • Working on ways to make Zen Center more accessible to the community outside the practice centers.
“In addition to Zen Center, I am active in the areas of environment protection, especially the ocean environments, and in giving underserved people the financial information and tools to have a better life for them and their children. When I am not working with non-profits, I am an avid surfer, cyclist, and bass player. All that and taking care of my partner and my three cats pretty much fills my life.”
