The opening of Greens Restaurant in 1979 forever altered the landscape of vegetarian cuisine in the United Stated by dramatically lifting it from its roots in sporadic, out-of-the way cafes and placing it on a level with other fine dining restaurants. Established by San Francisco Zen Center, Greens initially provided Zen students with the opportunity to extend their practice into the workplace, creating an atmosphere of simple elegance, health, and attentiveness. Dedicated to serving seasonal food fresh from local sources for thirty years, Greens helped to pave the way for what has only recently become a more common practice of compassion and awareness in the world of fine dining long before such concepts rose to the forefront of environmental debate.
Please join San Francisco Zen Center and Greens for an evening filled with music by the world-renowned gypsy jazz ensemble, Le Jazz Hot (the Quartet of the Hot Club of San Francisco), and a key note addresses by Huey Johnson, founder and president of the Resource Renewal Institute and recipient of the United Nations Sasakawa Prize for environmental excellence, and Deborah Madison, cookbook author and local-food advocate. Proceeds from this event will help give vital support to Zen Center programs that include the organic farm apprenticeship program, environmental education for school children, as well as outreach activities that include distributing food to homeless people, providing meditation classes for prisoners, and working with families in transitional housing.
