Shokuchi Deirdre Carrigan has been teaching Yoga in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1988. She began her Yoga studies at The Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco, studying for many years with Judith Lasater, and she graduated from the Advanced Studies Program at The Yoga Room, Berkeley, where she taught weekly classes served on the Advanced Studies faculty. Her primary teacher for over 20 years has been Donald Moyer. Shokuchi founded the Yoga programs at three branches of The Bay Club, San Francisco and taught Yoga in health clubs, yoga studios and private corporations around the Bay Area before opening her own studio in San Francisco. In her practice and teaching of Yoga, Shokuchi emphasizes careful and mindful attention to anatomical function and balance. She has also studied the Sanskrit language, as well as The Yoga Sutra, the Bhagavad Gita, and Vedic Stotra with Dr. Ram Karam Sharma, and Indira Devi, and continues her Sanskrit studies, with a focus on Mahayana Buddhist sutras and commentaries.

Shokuchi has practiced at San Francisco Zen Center since 1984, when she attended a Yoga and Zen retreat at Green Gulch Farm, co-lead by Tenshin Reb Anderson and Donald Moyer. She continued to practice and study the Buddha Way with Tenshin Roshi at Green Gulch and Tassajara and was ordained by him as a Zen Priest in March of 2010. She currently lives at Green Gulch, trains as a priest, and serves as Conference Coordinator.

Shokuchi received a B.A. in Contemporary Literature from Scripps College, a B.F.A. in Dance from California Institute of the Arts, and an MA in Dance/Video from Lone Mountain College. She performed in modern dance companies for 25 years, and directed KADEKA DANCES FOR KIDS, a company of professional dancers who conducted creative movement classes, teacher education workshops, parent-child dance classes, and family performances throughout the western US.
