Classes & Extended Courses

Classes are organized around a core six-root curriculum.
  • Root I: The life of the Buddha and early texts
  • Root II: Buddhist psychology
  • Root III: Buddhist wisdom
  • Root IV: Ethics and compassion
  • Root V: Zen
  • Root VI: Contemporary developments in Buddhism

In Roots I through V, the study is text-based. Our emphasis is on understanding the material for its relevance to Buddhist insight, practice, and living. Root VI, Contemporary Buddhism, is concerned with issues relevant to us as Buddhists living in a complex and diverse culture.

Classes are offered on Sunday morning and Monday and Tuesday evenings. An ongoing sewing class is offered on Sunday afternoon.

Fee for six-week class series: $90 nonmembers, $81 current SFZC members, $72 limited income.

$20 service charge

50% of the total fees

Practicing in the Light of Buddha's Compassionate Insight, GGF Class, 2/21-3/21

We will discuss and practice how the Sixteen Bodhisattva Precepts might impact not only our own daily life, but the lives of the people around us.


Exploring the Lotus Sutra, GGF Class, 2/17-3/24

The Sutra of the Lotus Flower of the Wonderful Dharma, or Lotus Sutra, has been revered since ancient times as “the most excellent sutra” and is loved by millions of people.


Contemplative Caregiver Course 2014
January 31 - December 6, 2014

A yearlong certificate training program in contemplative practices and care methods, offered in collaboration with Beyond Measure School for Contemplative Care, founded by Jennifer Block.


Sewing Buddha's Robe

Instruction in sewing a rakusu, Buddha’s robe, is offered for those who are preparing for the Bodhisattva Initiation Ceremony with a Zen Center or affiliated teacher.
