with Eijun Linda Cutts
Mondays, February 17 – March 24, 2014
7:30 – 9:00 p.m.
The Sutra of the Lotus Flower of the Wonderful Dharma, or Lotus Sutra, has been revered since ancient times as “the most excellent sutra” and is loved by millions of people. Translated from the Sanskrit into Chinese in 406 CE, it includes the Buddha’s teachings of Universal Enlightenment, skill in means, and the compassionate Bodhisattva Way. The Lotus Sutra employs unforgettable teaching parables and amazing descriptions of the splendors of gatherings of buddhas and bodhisattvas. Parts of the Lotus Sutra are chanted daily in Japanese Soto Zen monasteries, and it is quoted extensively by Dogen Zenji in his writings.
In this class we will incorporate traditional practices, mentioned many times in the text, of reading, reciting and copying as we study “opening, demonstrating, entering and awakening” to the Lotus Sutra.
