With Green Gulch as our canvas, delightful sensory prompts will help writers tap into their best material, enriching memory and story with imagery and detail. We’ll practice ways to be aware of all our senses and how to write about them in our authentic voices. In this retreat we’ll have instruction, creative writing exercises and feedback, along with meditation to awaken awareness, spark creativity and make our writing come alive.

Laura Deutsch’s book Writing from the Senses was published by Shambhala in 2014. A writer and teacher, Laura’s personal essays and features have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, MORE magazine, and many other publications. Her work has been anthologized in several collections, including Best Women’s Travel Writing, and has aired on public radio. Laura has led retreats at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, at Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, in southwest France and in Tuscany, Italy, and has taught writing at the University of California at Berkeley, San Francisco State University, and Book Passage.
Reirin Alheidis Gumbel has been a resident at SFZC since 2003, was ordained as a Soto Zen priest by Furyu Nancy Schroeder in 2007, and was Head Monk in 2012. She held several senior staff positions at Green Gulch Farm and is currently Ino there.
