Ryugin Rita Cummings currently serves on the Board of Directors as Vice President–Operations for San Francisco Zen Center. Rita began her Zen Buddhist practice in 1996 at Green Gulch Farm, and received Jukai (Lay Ordination) in 2001 from Central Abbess Linda Ruth Cutts. She was Director of Development for San Francisco Zen Center from 2001 to 2005, and was also a resident of City Center during that time, including a practice period at Tassajara.

Born in Dundee, Scotland, Rita is an alumna of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she studied in the PhD program in English Language and Literature. Rita has published a chapbook of poetry, and is currently working on a new collection of haiku based on Zen temple life. She has also contributed to several books and articles on California women artists, including: One Foot on the Rockies: Women and Creativity in the Modern American West, From Footnote to Fame: American Women Artists, and Yesterday & Tomorrow: California Women Artists.

A former board member of Schumacher College Foundation and The Scottish Writer’s Centre in the UK, she has also been on the board of a number of women’s and girls’ non-profits including The Women’s Foundation, The Women’s Building, The Older Women’s League, and the YWCA.
