Establishing the Path of Practice - 2009

One-Year Non-Residential Training Program
With Abbot Ryushin Paul Haller and Kiku Christina Lehnherr

Begins: Saturday, January 24, 2009
11 am - 5 pm
See tentative schedule below.

This one-year, experiential training program is intended to help participants develop a sustainable daily meditation practice and the fundamental skills of mindfulness and body awareness that support bringing practice to everyday activities and relationships. The training extends throughout one year. Some experience in meditation would help but is not essential. We will use the modalities of sitting meditation, guided meditation, yoga, sensing, mindfulness activities, inquiry, exploration of themes in diads, triads and smaller peer groups, etc. to enable us to apply the principles, traditions and rituals of Zen Buddhist practice to our daily lives in the market place.

There will be three parts to the course:

First Trimester:

Establishing the fundamentals of sitting practice, cultivation of body awareness and the ability to bring mindfulness to daily activities. These will be continued throughout all three trimesters.

Second Trimester:

Exploring intra- and interpersonal habits of thoughts, feelings, actions and re-actions that arise in everyday situations and learning ways to practice with them.

Third Trimester:

Discovering how the insights we are gaining through practice can be expressed and embodied in all aspects of our lives and how the cultivation and practice of intention can support this.

Participation includes:

  • Commitment to daily sitting at home (30 minutes) or Zen Center
  • Attendance of the scheduled bi-monthly EPP all-participants meetings (Saturdays and Thursdays, see dates and times below)
  • Attendance of the bi-monthly peer support group meetings  (1½ hour meetings, days/dates to be determined by the participants)
  • Homework of daily body and mindfulness practices
  • Monthly written reflections

Fees per trimester:  $300 regular; $270 current members; $240 limited income. Participants sign up for each trimester separately.
