The Brahmajala Sutta is placed as the first discourse in the collected scriptures of early Buddhism. By presenting a radical message of an alternative to relying on religious views, including many Buddhist views, this discourse provides a good foundation for reading all the discourses of the Buddha.

The text opens with an important teaching about how Buddhist practitioners can relate to any criticism directed to Buddhism. It ends with a description of how to become free by going beyond all views. This evening's talk will provide an accessible introduction to this important discourse.

Text: See the Brahmajala Sutta online, or see the translation by Maurice Walshe in The Long Discourses of the Buddha published by Wisdom Press.
