In this class we will experience one of the foundational teachings of Mahayana Buddhism, the Heart Sutra, in a very traditional way. In the practice called shakyo
, we will encounter the sutra by making a copy of the text. Stroke by stroke, we take it in as the flow of brush over paper. Receiving the sutra’s wisdom in this way, participants will make one complete copy of the sutra in English or in kanji (Sino-Japanese characters).
Everyone is welcome, whether beginner or experienced. Bring a small brush, sumi ink, and ink stone if you have them. Tracing paper and other basic materials will be also provided. Fees:

Konin Melissa Cardenas
Konin began the practice of Zen meditation in 1987, and was ordained a Soto Zen priest in Japan by Sekkei Harada Roshi in 2007. She lived at Tassajara and City Center for several years. Shosan Victoria Austin is her Senior Practice Leader. Currently Konin is the leader of “Dharma en Espaņol,” and a Spiritual Care Counselor at Pathways Home Health and Hospice in Concord, California.
